Matsushima is famous for its bay, which is dotted with some 260 pine-clad islets and has been ranked one of Japan's Three Most Scenic Views. Shiroishi was under control of the Katakura clan, a family of retainers of the Date clan. Part of the castle tower was faithfully restored in 1995 and visitors can see the city center from there. Shiroishi Umen (warm noodles) is a local delicacy of Shiroishi city.
